COUNTY LIBRARY LAUNCHES CALIFORNIA READS PROGRAMMING

Grant Funded Series Promotes Civic Dialogue at the Library

April 19, 2012

San Diego County Library (SDCL) is celebrating Library Month throughout April by telling the story of the essential services that libraries provide. The library functions as a sanctuary and community living room where all points of view are welcome. SDCL is currently hosting California Reads, a series of programs taking place now through November designed to promote civic dialogue and meaningful conversation. SDCL received the $15,000 grant from Cal Humanities to host a reading and discussion series based upon the books Farewell to Manzanar, Lost City Radio, and the Penguin Guide to the Constitution.

"Public libraries are essential and serve as sanctuaries for democracy," said Library Director José Aponte. "Our doors are open to everyone, and we encourage civic engagement and candid dialogue among all ages."

SDCL's California Reads programs are aimed at encouraging families and people from all walks of life will explore - online and off - what discoveries and lessons about democracy lie in works of fiction and nonfiction, provocative cultural exhibits and public conversations. Upcoming programs include:

  • Kokeshi Doll Craft on May 14 @ 4 p.m.: Bonita Branch, 4375 Bonita Rd
  • Origami Craft on May 29 @ 3 p.m.: Spring Valley Branch, 836 Kempton St
  • Japanese Culture Storytime on May 30 @ 10:30 a.m.: Alpine Branch, 2130 Arnold Way

Branches across the county will be participating in California Reads, with various book discussions, guest speakers, related movie screenings, craft programs, and other programs being offered through November. Visit www.sdcl.org or contact your local library for program information.
