Verna Silvia

"I love libraries," volunteer Verna Silvia said with a big smile just before the Homework Helper after school program began at the Ramona Library. Verna was a high school math teacher in Connecticut and Massachusetts for 20 years before returning to San Diego, where she works part-time as a tutor for Ramona Community School. "I'm impressed with how hard the kids are trying and with the parents who want their children to succeed." Verna volunteers every Wednesday and helps the kids with math, English, and science.

One of those children is Ediberto Martinez, whose father brings him to the Homework Center at the Ramona Community Library most days of the week. "Mrs. Silvia is very helpful," Ediberto explains, "and she's nice."
