Ramses Lopez

For Teen Read Week, the East County Mobile Library decided to have a "design a bookmark" art activity. The teens could draw anything that inspired them, a book, an author, a story that meant something to them, etc. The bookmobile staff asked the Rancho San Diego Friends of the Library to participate and select bookmarks for prizes.

Twice a month, the bookmobile sees the students from Monarch School in downtown San Diego. The school's librarian, Leticia Castellano, walks over two groups of students between 2:00 and 3:00. Chuck Gentry told her about the bookmark program/activity and gave her the blank bookmarks. On the scheduled visit on October 19th, Leticia told her class of teens about the bookmobile's Teen Read Month. She said before she could finish, one of her students, named Ramses, wanted the blank bookmark to start on.

He had never participated in an activity like this before so it surprised everyone that he was so eager to be part of it. The bookmark craft motivated him so much that he drew three bookmarks!
